On October 20, 7:00 – 8:30 pm, the fifth annual battlefield illumination will be held at Ball’s Bluff Battlefield Regional Park. Some 259 luminaries will line the path to the cemetery and the walls of the cemetery itself to honor the 223 Union soldiers and 36 Confederate soldiers who were killed in that battle on October 21, 1861. “Taps” will be played by a bugler on the half hour. This will be a quiet, memorial event with no formal program. Visitors are asked to respect the mood and not engage in loud conversations while on the field.
The event is free. Battlefield guides will be on hand to explain the battle and the event and to answer questions. For further details contact George Tabb, Ball’s Bluff park manager, at 703-779-9372. Rain date will be October 27.
