On October 23, 2011, the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War host a ceremony honoring Oregon Senator Edward D. Baker. Killed leading the Federal troops at the Battle of Balls Bluff, Baker was the only sitting US Senator killed in the Civil War.
The Col. Edward D. Baker Camp Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW) and the Oregon Civil War Sesquicentennial Commission sponsor the event. The ceremony starts at 12:30 PM at the Balls Bluff Battlefield Regional Park, in Leesburg, Virginia. Admission is free.
Speakers include historians James A. Morgan III and Randol B. Fletcher. Morgan authored A Little Short of Boats: The Fights at Ball’s Bluff and Edward’s Ferry, recently re-released in a revised and expanded edition. Fletcher is the author of Hidden History of Civil War Oregon.
